Arthur’s mate by Lisa Daniels

Book 1 in the Bears of Valor Lake series

Emma is living in Valor Lake, a place she picked off a map when she couldn’t tolerate life in Phoenix with her parents and manipulative boyfriend a moment longer. She finds a job and eventually runs in to Arthur at a bar. He’d just had a very public breakup with his girlfriend, and the two start to chat. Arthur invites Emma fishing and, to his surprise, she accepts. She thinks that if she’s going to live here she should figure out what people do for fun and get to know some people. She has no intention of rushing into a relationship, but the way Arthur keeps looking at her makes her wonder. Arthur’s sister Yara is becoming a good friend, too.

Arthur has some problems of his own. Family members can’t agree on how to use the land and tensions are high. Meanwhile, his mother and grandmother are obsessed with him having an heir to protect their claim to the land. Strangers are unusual in bear shifter lands, but he’s intrigued by Emma and her problems. He wants to help her.

I enjoyed the book and read it in an afternoon. The story of Emma and Arthur was a nice story with interesting supernatural aspects. I recommend it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout. My opinions are always my own.

Chris, by Becca Fanning (MC Bear Mates VI)

I usually don’t read books in the MC genre, but I read a sample of Chris and I was hooked from the beginning.  I had also read the first book in this series.

Most shifters spend decades, even centuries looking for their fated mates, but Chris and his mate knew each other from the moment 15 year old Ava reached maturity.  Unfortunately Chris is in his 80’s and he faces waiting years for Ava to grow up.  Even worse, Ava is the daughter of the club president and daddy is very protective of his little girl.

Over the years Ava has become impatient and bitter waiting for her life to begin.  Her parents are strict and she’s stuck in the clubhouse working on the family businesses and waiting on Chris.  At 25, she’s still considered a baby in shifter terms and won’t reach maturity until 40.

This story premise is unusual and it really caught my interest.  I read the book in one evening and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Ava go from hopeless and helpless to strong once some hope appears.  The author allows Ava to mature on her own and not just because she has her mate.  This makes her a much stronger character in the story.

Legacy, by Becca Fanning (Shifter Royal Dynasty Trilogy book 1)

A really enjoyable change of pace for this author. Exciting new world. Legacy is book 1 the Shifter Royal Dynasty trilogy. No cliffhangers and a happy ending for now.

Kris is on a study abroad for her Masters degree at the insistence of her parents. The plans fall apart after Kris has sex with a guy she met at a bar. Emotionally thrown for a loop, she finds that she’s pregnant.

Korrin, son of a shifter group’s king, is waiting for his brother to take over the throne and worrying about his father’s declining health, although he pretends not to care.

When the celebration is attacked Korrin realizes Kris might be in danger and goes to find her. Meanwhile, Kris is dodging attacks. When Korrin finds her he has to kidnap her to get her to safety until the attackers and their motive is uncovered.  Once she discovers the roma lifestyle she is fascinated and just wants stay to learn more about it and her link with Korrin.

Legacy is a great mix of action, intrigue and romance. The whole trilogy is available so you won’t have to wait long to find out what happens next.
