Dragon Undercover by Lia Davis and Kerry Adrienne

Starting an undercover mission at Coon Lake, dragon shifter Owen is attracted to a giggle from Nextdoor.  Following his ears and nose, he finds something he wasn’t expecting: his mate.  Nadia and her younger sister Sage are at the lake to celebrate before Sage goes off to college.  With a bit of matchmaking, Sage arranges for Owen to come to dinner the next night and then suddenly announces she has other plans.

Owen’s mission now takes on greater meaning.  His target, the rogue dragon/serial killer named Huff that killed Owen’s sister several years ago may be in the area and, unfortunately, Sage fits his victim profile.

When Sage disappears from a sleepover with friends, Owen and Nadia start searching for her.  If only he could figure out how to explain about Huff, the dragon who took Sage and also explain that he is a dragon shifter and she is his fated mate.  No problem.there, right?

Dragon undercover is a short novel with a fast-moving plot.  It serves as an introduction to the world and to the members of the Dark Scales Division.  A very exciting story and great characters.  I look forward to reading more in this series.

I received a free copy of this book.  My opinions, as always, are my own.

The Shifter’s Hostage by T. S. Ryder

Lydia and Amber are late closing the restaurant.  They are busy dreaming about Lydia opening her own restaurant and hiring Amber to bake desserts. Their daydreams are cut short by robbers bursting in with guns and herding the girls into the walk-in freezer.  Worried about what comes next, they are alarmed to hear an explosion and then Ian, a regular customer they dislike because he is so picky about food and never tips.  Ian explains that the robbers were demons and he grabs the two of them and throws them in his car explaining that they aren’t safe unless they are under his protection.  That includes living with him indefinitely.

Ian is a dragon shifter–the last of his kind– and he is charged with making sure demons stay in hell. Frankly he hasn’t been doing a very good job lately (say, the last 300 years) because he is bitter that humans killed his family.  Lydia’s family was also killed when she was young and it turns out that she is a paladin.  Paladins are humans who hide the gates to hell.

Ian also decides now is the time to think about having an heir (or several) and to propose a loveless mating with one of the women.  Given that he has zero social skills, this doesn’t go well at all. Fortunately for him, Lydia stays around to be trained as a Paladin and help find the gate.  If she can manage not to kill him first, maybe with time attraction can bloom between them?

The Shifter’s Hostage starts off quick with action and then switches to humorous culture-shock sequences between Ian and Lydia due to Ian’s complete lack of social niceties.  Lydia is not afraid to call him on his rudeness, even if he is a dragon. Their by-play is amusing as they work together to train Lydia to use her powers and to find the gate so they can seal it.

I enjoyed the book.  I must say that the ending seemed a little abrupt as the story bogs down a bit when the action and banter stops.  Still, an enjoyable read. Currently comes with a variety of bonus stories.

Determined Prince (Captured by a dragon Shifter #1) by Michelle M. Pillow

The planet Quirilixen was settled long ago by dragon shifters from earth.  Now, due to a decline in the number of female shifters born, they need to reopen the portal to earth and acquire new brides.  They study earth transmissions and prepare to make a trial run to find a bride for Prince Kyran.

Eve plays guitar and sings for a hard-rock band.  After an especially good set, Eve decides to celebrate her birthday.  After a few shots of tequila she has some very strange conversations with an oddly dressed, but well-built man dressed as a cowboy.

Eve wakes up the next morning on Quirilixen where she quickly discovers that she’s not on earth anymore, Kyran is a dragon-shifter, and he says that they’re married or almost married.

The story is a fish-out-of water tale for both characters.  Kyran has some strange ideas about modern earth from his research into TV transmissions, and Eve has a lot of adjustments to make when she finds out just what she’s gotten herself into.

Determined prince is a fun novella and I recommend it for a light afternoon read.

Wyvern’s Warrior by Deborah Cooke

Logic and emotion must be balanced when a cyborg meets a dragon princess

Wyvern’s Warrior is an interesting addition to The Dragons of Incendium Series by Deborah Cooke. (Book 3). Action, a cyborg mercenary is sent on a mission to Incendium. Thalina, a princess of Incendium, intercepts him sneaking into the vaults and realizes two things, he’s her mate, and he’s a cyborg. Thalina has longed to study cyborgs, but they are forbidden on Incendium so she now has an opportunity.

Action had some programming added just before he left on his mission and he believes he is being tested by the hive, the collective mind from his planet. Strange sensations and illogical things are happening to him and he’s not sure how to deal with them. As he and Thalina hide in the vaults, they discover many things, about themselves, each other, and Action’s mission.

The story is a fast-paced chase through the vaults and beyond. I found it exciting and thought-provoking. The cyborg learning about his new “programming” promotes lots of thinking about what makes one alive. Out of contact with the Hive, Action must adjust on his own, relying on his new programming and Thalina’s help.

This is the first book in the series I have read, but I did read the short story that proceeded it, which introduced some of the ideas about emotion vs logic. It will be interesting to see how the plot arcs develop in subsequent books and stories.

Skye, by Kimberly Loth

Skye is book 4 in the Dragon Kings series. The series is best read in order because the story continues throughout the books. In this book, the story backs up to the end of book 2 and continues from Skye’s point of view.

Skye is shocked to find that she has turned black. What does it mean? Before she leaves to seek advice, she stops by to say goodbye to Rowan. To her surprise, he insists on going with her.

Rowan is in love with Skye and although she doesn’t feel the same way, he’s not planning to let her leave him behind. Together they flee their friends and family to find out what Skye’s color change means. It isn’t going to be an easy quest because as the signs confirm the prophesy, enemies seem to be around every corner.

Skye is a solid continuation of the series and I can’t wait for the finale!

Valentine, by Kimberly Loth

Valentine is Book 3 in the Dragon Kings series. This series is best read in order because one story continues throughout the series.

In Hawaii, Hazel grabs the last seat on a flight home. Her brother Rowan is missing and she’s on the way home to join the search. Meanwhile, she wouldn’t mind distracting herself from her worries by flirting with the gorgeous guy in the next seat.

Valentine is a fire dragon who recently turned black, indicating he will be king. After a week of human orientation, he’s on a plane to Yellowstone to join Obsidian, the other king, for further training. He’s been told he must find a queen and the girl sitting next to him is the most interesting woman he’s met so far.

An attack during the flight is just the beginning. The appearance of two kings means that the prophecy of three kings is coming true and war is on the way.

In this book the relationships and conflicts develop the story further. Valentine’s naiveté is cute since he’s only observed human relationships from watching campers in the park.  The relationships become very complicated.  I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

Aspen , by Kimberly Loth

Aspen is Dragon Kings series book 2. Series should be read in order as it is all one story.

Obsidian (Sid) is a dragon king, spending his required time living as a human.  Aspen is a human dragon aficionado.  Sid and Aspen are joined, but that’s  a problem.  Dragon Kings don’t get to choose their queens and if anybody fins out they’re joined they could be killed.  Sid has a daring plan to save them, but can they pull it off?

Meanwhile, they thought the had caught and punished the dragon who was killing humans, but when the attacks resume they must re-assess.  Can Sid catch the killer and manage to keep Aspen alive, too?

I think Aspen is a very enjoyable novel and it keeps the story moving as Aspen and Sid complete the  first half of their senior  year.
